Knife Defense An Mpeg Review
Today I am giving you a huge mpeg on knife defenses.
This martial arts film footage was taken from a knife use and defense tape, which, if you decide you enjoyed the Combat Martial Arts Ezine article enough, can be ordered here on line. Just scroll down on the left to the videos link (sorry about the popups, it's a free site). Master Grube is attacking in this film footage. The only thing I am allowed to do during this offense defense self-defense drill is to block and evade. Previous to this knife defense article was an article on knife use. I have written two articles on knife use thus far and this one on knife defense.
I am only giving you the tools to survive an attack on you or your loved ones. You are completely responsible for the legal use of these self-defense techniques and the safe practice of these self-defense techniques. This is a 10 meg knife techniques mpeg so it may take a while to load for my Combat Martial Arts Ezine subscribers.
I must have captured 20 mpeg slices of knife use and defense before I opted on demonstrating a basic use of the knife incorporating most attacks. So what you will see here is an offense - defense drill wherein my student (played here by my good friend Master Grube wife) may only block and evade the attack. You will find the offense - defense drill in my ebook Bringing The Martial Artist Out From Within - Drills To Enhance Your Own Self-Defense Abilities.
Master Grube does an excellent job throwing all types of attacks a street fighter may throw at me.
Notice during this offense defense self-defense drill my primary means of defending against the knife is a combination of evasive movements and blocks. The blocks are actually secondary defenses. My main goal is not be in the line of attack.
My secondary goal is to be able to get behind my attacker. You'll notice in the mpeg about 90% of my evasive movements involve me moving to the outside of Master Grube so he cannot attack me with his other weapons (fist, feet, etc.). This evasive movement to the outside also gives me a better chance of moving behind my attacker to either run or defend myself while at the same time limiting the weapons and angles of attack available to my attacker.
During circular knife attacks my goal is to stay out of the arc of the knife. This would involve me moving outside of the arc of attack or inside the arc of attack. Control of the weapon obviously becomes a big concern if you move inside the arc of the knife attack.
Notice in one combination of blocks I was able to "stick" to Master Grube's arm. This is a result of Continuous Blocking Drill and Sticky Hands.
Mistakes I noticed I Made During Filming
Well for one facing Master Grube at all. He's a great martial artist.
Not running away from a guy with a knife.
Now on to more technical mistakes.
As I explained in Bringing The Martial Artist Out From Within, the primary targets for edged weapons are the Subscribe....
When I boxed, I was taught not to cross my feet as I moved so I would not get caught with one foot behind the other. I noticed I did this a few times defending against Master Grube's attacks. Your better movements would be a slide left or right with the closest leg to your direction you are moving.
I usually attempt to use as little motion as possible when blocking. It does not look like a did a very good job of it in this clip. I should have kept my arms up more and used smaller motions. Sometimes being confident about distance and positioning opens you up.
For practicing control of the knife be sure to practice my variations of one and two step sparring. Practice one and two step sparring both when you have a safety knife and when you do not but your partner does. Even as a black belt, if you find you are uncomfortable in a certain situation or position, practice in that situation or position until you are comfortable. I've heard several instructors say to me things like, "We don't go to the ground" , well guess where I'm taking you then. Examples of one and two step sparring are in my lethal techniques mpeg martial arts article.
If you are seeing this on line don't bother emailing me that you cannot see the mpeg and some of the text is missing the complete martial arts article is for serious martial artists who have subscribed to the Combat Martial Arts Ezine.
I do not believe I need to be very descriptive in the techniques themselves as the knife defense mpeg does that for me, but I wanted to cover this particular aspect of the knife defense theories and practical uses.

Coming soon by Master Keith Pascal - Cane Use and Defense
I received good compliments in using mpegs for self-defense articles and will continue to do so and be the first to use mpegs as a major part of an instructional article.
