Knife Use and Defense Basics When You Have The Knife
Kirkham's Combat Martial Arts Ezine Issue One
I've seen a lot of self-defense articles on how to defend yourself against an attacker wielding a knife. I see very few on how to use a knife in a self-defense situation. Why? Litigation probably, get some smuck who uses this aggressively and all the judges and lawyers get rich. So let's start this way.
J. Richard Kirkham, The Combat Martial Arts Ezine and its affiliates do not accept responsibility for any injuries as a result directly and or indirectly from the material in this article and or past articles and or future articles. It is up to the reader of this article to obey state, federal, and country regulations.
Now that's that over with and you agree to accept responsibility for your own actions. If you're under 18 you should not be reading this. Let's get to it.

Why Learn to Fight with a Knife
According to research, what you lack in offense you will also lack in defense. Makes sense if you think about it. What do you think a Tae Kwon Do practitioner is more likely to be hit with, a haymaker he never practiced against or a flying side kick (try one of those to a mugger and see what happens). Would you throw a jab against a boxer or execute a shin kick? Are you starting to get the idea? None of the martial artists practiced against these techniques because the techniques are not in their style! Even if you do not carry a knife (a practice I do not recommend), you'd better become very familiar with the attacks and feints a knife fighter may try if you are going to successfully defend yourself against a knife.
I can think of many other scenarios that justify learning to use a knife in a defensively aggressive manner. You're in the kitchen when someone breaks into your house. What do you have near by? You're attacked by two people and you disarm one of your attackers who had a knife (we will cover multiple attack defense in another serious martial arts article). You're on your way back from fencing class when a man in black admits he is not left handed either (never mind you had to see the movie)

Conclusion
I am not trying to teach you how to use a knife better so you can be a bad a@#$ and carry a knife. Nor am I going to be showing you how to use the weapons of your body better so you can be a bully. I am showing you these self-defense techniques because I believe they may be necessary to save your life or the life of your loved one someday. These blatantly realistic martial arts techniques cannot be discussed in my free martial arts ezine where a child or a nonserious martial arts practitioner can get a hold of them easily.
